What is the difference between balance and equity?

Balance is the realized value of your account: the initial balance plus the results of your closed trades and all charged swaps and commissions – open positions are not included. Equity is balance plus the floating profit or loss of your open positions. Equity is your account's real-time value, and both loss limits are evaluated on it continuously.
